We encourage middle school students to "learn how to be responsible, competent net citizens who can protect their privacy and safety."* Therefore, middle school students are given a lot of freedom with respect to the use of technology resources to complete their school work. With this freedom comes additional expectations and responsibilities. Before your child is allowed access to the computers, they need to review this policy with you and return a signed Acceptable Use Agreement.
While at Mountaintop Montessori, I will use technology (whether it is school equipment or my own) for educational purposes only.
This includes things like NOT checking your personal e-mail accounts, using Facebook, Youtube and Twitter or other social networking sites, or sending instant messages to friends.
I understand that I need permission to bring and use personal electronic equipment such as laptops, cell phones, MP3 players, cameras, etc. on campus and on school-related outings.
You must get permission from Kim to bring personal electronic equipment on campus.
Any cell phone use will be limited to emergency use, at all other times cell phones should be left in lockers.
Permission must be sought to use a hand-held electronic device for calendaring and/or note taking.
Kim will need to inspect any laptop brought to school to verify that anti-virus software is installed and setup access to the Internet.
Mountaintop Montessori is not responsible for lost, damaged or stolen equipment.
I understand that I am solely responsible for what I say and do online.
Because of things like blogs, wikis and online social networking sites like Facebook, YouTube and Twitter it is more important than ever that you consider how your online conduct could reflect on you and Mountaintop Montessori. Think before you click - there is no undo button once you post something online.
I will use the google account and wiki access provided by Mountaintop Montessori for school-related activities.
These accounts are monitored and they are setup to use for school-related purposes only.
I will not post online any digital images or video captured on campus without prior approval.
The capturing of digital images and/or videos on campus or on a field trip can be shared in the classroom or with parents, but should not be posted online without authorization. Contact Kim with any questions about sharing digital images or videos online.
I will not participate in cyberbullying.
Cyberbullying includes things like sending hurtful messages and images or posting cruel comments on the internet. Remember that if you wouldn’t say something to someone’s face, you certainly shouldn’t text it, IM it, or post it either.
I will use technology and internet resources at Mountaintop Montessori safely and responsibly. This includes things like:
Caring for the equipment properly.
Respecting the privacy of others.
Self-limiting use of printer ink and paper.
Using appropriate language and subject matter.
Not downloading inappropriate or unauthorized content.
Not visiting unknown links - you are always better off searching for website then accidentally going to a website address that you are not sure about.
Not accessing internet sites that are offensive, obscene, libelous, disruptive or that contain inflammatory language or images.
Not giving out my personal information online (personal info includes things like your full name, address, phone number, e-mail address or school name).
Saving and backing up my work (use memory stick and/or Google Docs).
I will only use technology resources in the big room in the middle school building.
Middle school students are not allowed to use technology outside the middle school building. Students in after school or on a field trip are not allowed to use any electronic devices, except a camera. Any inappropriate use of technology by a student will result in the immediate loss of technology privileges.
I understand that if I misuse technology resources, I will lose the privilege of using these resources at school.
Personal e-mail may not be accessed for any reason at school. Students can use their school Google accounts to upload their work at home and retrieve at school. The students with personal computers need to understand this applies to them as well.
The consequences of accessing personal e-mail, personal social media accounts or instant messaging while at school will begin with a minimum 2 week suspension from the use of any technology at school, but may involve a longer period or permanent suspension of technology use on campus, depending on the nature of the violation.
Acceptable Use Agreement
I have reviewed the Middle School Acceptable Use Policy and understand how it applies to me and my use of technology resources at Mountaintop Montessori and on school-related outings. I understand that I must get permission to use personal electronic equipment on campus and that Mountaintop Montessori is not responsible for lost, damaged or stolen equipment. I understand that use of personal technology equipment on campus comes under the same acceptable use policies as school equipment.
